Energize South Coast Helped Coos County Residents and Businesses Install Over 40 Ductless Heat Pumps

Sep 21, 2020

All residents and business owners in Coos County recently had access to a $600-1,000 discount on their ductless heat pump purchase through Energize South Coast. When combined with utility incentives, the purchase price for a ductless heat pump was less than half of the original cost. Incentives were available from the following utilities:

  • Central Lincoln PUD
  • City of Bandon Electric Department
  • Coos-Curry Electric Co-op
  • Pacific Power customers through Energy Trust of Oregon

Energize South Coast used a community-driven campaign to engage local volunteers and chose a local installer for all program installations. The program selected local installer Pacific Air Comfort through a competitive bidding process. Volunteers also conducted outreach, which resulted in three online workshops with more than 140 attendees present at one of the workshops. Workshop attendees installed over 40 new ductless heat pumps through the program which ran from May to September 2020.

This program has been so successful that Energize South Coast is already planning another purchasing round for Coos County consumers. The program plans to start outreach for the second round this winter and will focus on low-income customers and people of color. Energize South Coast hopes to work closely with the local tribes in the installer selection and outreach process.

Spark Northwest, the program’s organizer, has organized three similar Energize campaigns to date with local partners, including Energize Rogue, Energize Klickitat, and HEATWISE. Each program provides discounted systems to its participants along with education on energy-efficient home heating to interested residents. Over the course of six campaigns in Washington and Oregon, Spark Northwest has educated 740 families and spurred efficient heating installations in 250 homes, saving residents almost $50,000 collectively per year in home energy costs. Beyond saving energy, Energize campaigns have also created 11 new green jobs within rural HVAC installation companies.
